Chapter 22
Friday, August 15th, 2031
Black Emerald Lair, Utah
Black Emerald studied the readings from Wrenâs scanner curiously, and as she did so her lips pressed together tightly, a bit unhappy about what she was seeing.
It was after midnight, but sheâd been studying the readings for the better part of twelve hours, going through every bit of data she had. Lilithâs biology wasnât the issue, as that was something which Black Emerald could pick apart at her leisure and was quite straightforward in the end. Despite Shadowmindâs obvious brilliance in most subjects, when it came to biology she wasnât as competent as Black Emerald was, and it showed. There were numerous tiny flaws that Black Emerald could see, but Lilith was still a most remarkable specimen, and one that would have interested her most of the time.
No, it was the magical readings that were making Black Emerald unhappy. Most people couldnât detect the magic of the divine, and even if they could, the magic tended to fade into the background. Most people also hadnât spent three years plotting how to break into Olympus to steal a tree from the gods there. Black Emerald stared at the schematic hard, debating what to do.
There were multiple magical readings from Lilith, though none were from active spells. Sheâd managed to scrub most of the ambient magic from the convention from the readings, but the aura from Morgan Le Fay and Warden had seeped into Lilith, leaving a slight residue of purple, gold, and blue. It was the ankh, blazing like a tiny white sun that concerned Black Emerald.
âNot Zeus⦠or any of the Olympians. Iâd be able to identify any of them,â Black Emerald muttered, grimacing slightly. âWhich means itâs one of the other factions. Probably Egyptian, but that could be someone else trying to throw us off the scent. Old one-eye? Probably not⦠heâd just throw Gungnir at someone. I donât like this.â
Deities were fickle, and interfering in their affairs was something that Black Emerald had learned was a poor idea. The only reason sheâd gotten away with her scheme was because it had amused Eris, whoâd helped her at the last moment. With Lilith being spirited away⦠it made Black Emerald practically itch, and she grimaced, picking up her phone and dialing a number.
The phone rang several times, then the line clicked and Wren spoke, her voice sleepy. âWhat? Itâs late, boss!â
âCancel your attendance,â Black Emerald said flatly. âYou can go elsewhere in the city if you want, but I want you out of there by noon tomorrow. Preferably out of the city.â
âWhat? But I thought you wanted me toââ Wren began, sounding far more awake than she had a few moments prior, but Black Emerald cut her off.
âIf I was there in person, I would be already packing my bags, Wren. Something is wrong, and every instinct I have says that itâs time to leave,â Black Emerald said bluntly. âI donât know if something is going to happen or not, but if it does, I donât want you in the line of fire.
